The Gmail team developed an alternate HTML-only version because Paul Buchheit, the person credited as being the Gmail inventor thought that "Gmail's reliance on AJAX was so scary". The HTML version works to this day.

Is there a big audience that would actually look for an HTML-only version of Gmail? Maybe mobile users on ill-supported platforms? In any case it's interesting to remember what was it (somewhat) like ten years ago when Gmail first launched.
