Not that I care all that much, I just think they're cool to read about and see pictures of. That and I didn't fall in love with the other options, I can think of thinks I'd much rather see. More on rockets and more on manufacturing technologies and material sciences.

I was also JUST, as in ten seconds before, thinking, hey, its time for a new poll already, and I then once I checked my messages and returned to the main page, there was one. Awesome timing.

A huge number of nerds own iDevices, and have since long before it was trendy to do so. Other nerds jumped on the iDevices bandwagon during the gold-rush era of the app-store. The original appeal of Apple devices was that it was different from what you used at work: "think different" was a successful ad campaign for a reason. Now that the hardware is popular we are expected to give it up as not different enough? What are we, hipsters?

I develop for iDevices and used a MacBook for years until it met an unfortunate and untimely end. The fact that I feel the need to post anonymously is disheartening. I would love to see stories about the interesting things that are happening in the Apple sphere of technology without the warfare regarding personal preference shifting the discussion.

Sure, I'd like to know if Apple does something interesting, such as a significant reworking of Darwin or switching architectures again, etc. But I'm not so interested in the "Apple has released their 20XX line of laptops" or "Rumor says Apple will add three new colors to their phone lineup". Also, we use it. There's a time for Erector sets and Altairs, and there's a time for having a high-defenition video camera that shoots at 120fps and also shoots 8MP stills at 10fps and oh yeah it's also a GPS with satellite imagery and live traffic and a million other things and it weighs a couple OUNCES. Doesn't matter if it's Apple or Android or whoever. I mean come on, if this [consumerist.com] isn't nerd heaven, I don't know what is.

I liked the idea of smartphones back when they were expensive and sucked*; then Apple made a great one and I wanted it. As it happens, a few million other people did too. Being popular does not automatically make it bad.

          * and I wanted one even before they existed. When I got my first Palm, I thought "this thing is awesome!" Then, the first time I read a number off my Palm and punched it into my phone, I though "It'll be great when I don't have to read a number off of one device and punch it into another." I very distinctly remember having that thought.

I disagree that Apple and nerds have nothing in common.

At my work, a large percentage of developers have a MacBook Pro or MacBook air, simply because they feel that it's the best hardware for their needs (they'll usually have another OS installed on it - in fact the head of our Microsoft partnership group has a MacBook with Win8).

Apple's OS upgrades often come with shiny new tech that contributes back to the Open Source community as well:

I agree that we don't need a bunch of articles about that time His Steveness dropped a wrapper on the sidewalk in 1985, but Apple stories can be a very interesting sign of where technology is headed.

I'd seriously like to see some better polls. The humour stuff is all ok, and a little is always good. But with this site just starting I'd love to see some polls that will actually see this site progress better and in a pleasantly democratic way.

A poll on the colour of the site. I've said it before, but this red isn't for me, and soylent needs to be green surely?

A poll on a logo, or other site appearance. Many folk, including myself, admire the pipedot look, but want to hang out here.

I think the name is done now, but that might have been good.

A poll on which technologies are most important for us to improve here and what priority. with options like Better moderation, improved ui, utf-8, filtering etc etc

Lets get making decisions not jokes! Some of the polls I'm suggesting might only need to run for just a couple of days to get decent results because people will be keen to be part of forgeing the future here. Maybe even 2 polls like this at once too. I know there is the irc and other places but surely polls is one of the best ways to do this...

I asked one of the insiders about the logo; it would be perfect if it were green. They're afraid Dice will sue them for trademark violation. As to the color of the site, they may be right, but I don't think so about the logo. There's no reason the package of Soylent can't be green, especially if it's inside a big orange circle.

    - Flying cars only 5 years away! It's time for that guy with the pretty-cool-but-totally-impractical-for-about-a-hu ndred-different-reasons prototype of a flying car to do the news cycle and drum up some more funding.

    - As above, but MARS! Yeah, Mars One need some more suckers to invest in their brochure-printing business.

    - Bill Gates: Billionaire philanthropist or complete dick? You decide.

    - Everything is about Obama: Something interesting and techy happened in, say, Nepal. Within ten posts, it devolves into a series of essays about why Obamacare is flawed, countered by detailed explanations of everything wrong with the republican party, followed by a comprehensive interpretations of the US law that show that this whole Nepalese thing is unconstitutional anyway, and will probably be struck down by the Supreme Court.

EVE battles were cool the first time or so. Novelty's worn off for me. Good to toss in there for variety on occasion.

Mostly, though, I want to see people exploring new stuff. What are people doing with Raspberry Pi units? What do we do about privacy when everybody's got Google Glass? What tech has NASA made available to the average home? Why is software security so difficult? How do you keep your concept of 'self' in the age of Facebook tags and Twitter auto-generated messages? Naturally this is just off the top of my head; what I find most valuable is the questions like these that I never would have thought of on my own, and the equally interesting answers. i think you are dead right.

i don't think we're after full scientific papers and content you need a PHD for, but i do think that a lot of people are here because slashdot got more and more joe Q public type stuff. A lot of the things I'm into my friends have no clue, and it's nice (read: fucking fantastic!) to have a place to go where smart people are talking about interesting subjects.

i would vote E, all of the above on the survey.

i'm after anything interesting in the technology/science vein. I'm into software, electronics, machines, etc. but I'm also fascinated to read up on biology, chemistry, math, physics - all the rest.

i think the problem is that websites end up tempted into thinking that getting the most visitors is the holy grail. for making money, that is true, but it ends up steering the content towards a generic and dumbed down (and often snarky) mediocrity. if you're running a site that has a relatively small and specific audience that won't tolerate clickbait, you probably ain't gonna get billionaire rich. if that's ok with the people running things it can work.

finally, I think that pieces about highly technical subjects written by people that don't really understand the subject are a huge problem. that, and misleading/overblown/snsationalist headlines. speak softly and carry a big stick.
