I would like to see stories with more depth. Things that people have thought about, not just stuff that has happened recently.

The other site degenerated into whichever shill could pump out the most press releases with nothing new to say. Lets look deeper into things.

That means looking at more editorial type content, and opinion pieces, not just press release from company x about how great new gadget / acquisition / ipo is.

    this sort of thing? [ctheory.net]

its an exploration of the Einsteins Nightmare meme via the work of Steigler.

Perhaps. I really hate that post-modernist crap, but I guess they are their own special type of nerd. I'm afraid I'm willfully ignorant about that sort of thing to judge it's quality. But if it's good, perhaps I'd learn something.

That's the thing about this sort of site, the subject matter experts can rally, interpret, and translate for the non-experts. That way we can get an expert opinion on the subject, and start to see the merits in TFA. Eventually we can get involved if we see something that interests us, and get some feedback.

I agree, one of the things that kept me coming back to Slashdot was that when I first came, there were some articles that I found fascinating which I could participate in, and some that went over my head more or less entirely. Over time, thanks to the informed commentary of Slashdotters(plus more than a little outside reading) I very rarely come across anything that is over my head. In other words it was an education in itself. Now if I came to Slashdot now for the first time I'm not sure the same thing would happen. I would like Soylent to be like that, informative and interesting for the average geek, but not too intimidating or incomprehesible for the newcomer, Natalie Portman and those hot grits of yours I'm talking about you.

I could do without any news whatever about acquisitions and IPOs here. I'm not an MBA or a greedster or a banker, I'm a NERD. I don't give a damn who owns what company. All I care about when it comes to companies is what cool new tech do you have, and how does it work?

If you hold an MBA, you're probably not a nerd.

Well, if a company providing a product you like goes IPO or is sold, you should be concerned. Because it often means that now the MBAs will take over, and your beloved product may turn into a big steaming pile of beta.

True. On the other hand, I'm probably likely to be interested in just about anything Elon Musk or one of his companies is doing. You wanna talk about a guy that "gets it" on a nerd level...

I've submitted a few stories here, and it's a bit of a challenge to do. It helps to have some basic knowledge of the subject area you may post about, then find new articles about the specific topic, select the best bits and links, and submit something that isn't terribly biased.

Fire away on the Submit Story link [dev.soylentnews.org] and keep this site growing.
