I'd seriously like to see some better polls. The humour stuff is all ok, and a little is always good. But with this site just starting I'd love to see some polls that will actually see this site progress better and in a pleasantly democratic way.

A poll on the colour of the site. I've said it before, but this red isn't for me, and soylent needs to be green surely?

A poll on a logo, or other site appearance. Many folk, including myself, admire the pipedot look, but want to hang out here.

I think the name is done now, but that might have been good.

A poll on which technologies are most important for us to improve here and what priority. with options like Better moderation, improved ui, utf-8, filtering etc etc

Lets get making decisions not jokes! Some of the polls I'm suggesting might only need to run for just a couple of days to get decent results because people will be keen to be part of forgeing the future here. Maybe even 2 polls like this at once too. I know there is the irc and other places but surely polls is one of the best ways to do this...

I asked one of the insiders about the logo; it would be perfect if it were green. They're afraid Dice will sue them for trademark violation. As to the color of the site, they may be right, but I don't think so about the logo. There's no reason the package of Soylent can't be green, especially if it's inside a big orange circle.

I wouldn't mind if, eventually, registered users could pick their own color in place of the red, green, etc., not including the logo. Might be a two birds, one stone kind of solution.

I think that's an excellent idea! It also wouldn't be hard to pull off.

Word from the inside is that the templating system is tied to running an instance of Apache for each different color scheme. Them's the breaks. It's not as easy as it should be, since Slash is a shining example of modular code, just like systemd.

Yes, but those other colors weren't people. If you remember from the movie, Soylent Green was sought after because of its taste.

ianal, but I don't think colours are copyrighted yet! Anda soylent green wouldn't be the same green as our former hosts, there are so many greens to choose from. If the exact same green were used, well perhaps. But if the only thing Dice felt able to sue over was the colour I don't think it would make a very persuasive court case...

That's what I tried to tell Barabbas. I can't see how a lime green or olive drab package of Soylent could be sued over. Caerainly not copyright, like you said, you can't copyright a color and the logo is a brand new work.

Yeah, I'm really not here to watch people do a goofy jig because they stole a few of Dice's users. And those polls (including this one) amount to a goofy jig.

My Slashdot replacement is making me miss Slashdot.

Also, less-sarcastic options, in case that's not clear.

When I see sarcasm, such as in this poll's answers, I don't know whether the option is meant as a yes this, or a ha ha f___ that.

I'm actually seriously on a bit of a rant here.

"Why Patent Reform Will Never Happen"
Well, I'd NEVER want to see a story about that topic, because I want patent reform to happen. So I would not choose this option... despite being very interested in stories about patent reform. Sarcasm = fail.

"Global Warming Something Something ... Hurricanes!"
So, with this on the front page, am I to assume SoylentNews is run by global warming deniers? I ask this because this wording reminds me of "blah blah terrorists 9/11" i.e. the way you make fun of a pass-anything/believe-anything congress. Sarcasm = fail.

"Why Google Glasses are so Awesome, and Why I Got Punched in the Face"
Ahh, so SoylentNews also believes Glassholes are a thing (as opposed to believing that violent, entitled, cro-magnon American Luddites who punch people for owning a piece of tech, are a thing) Seriously, I am about one more of these, away from going back to Slashdot and declaring SoylentNews to be a bunch of trolling anti-intellectuals.

You are what you present. With these polls, SoylentNews is presenting itself as having a conservative plebe agenda. Wtf.
