It looks like the poll was chosen from a list of stories that are in the Current Pending Submissions [dev.soylentnews.org] queue. I actually like that idea (even if it's temporary until we get more commenters than stories).
We could upvote or downvote the pending submissions until one reaches a magic number, and then that story would pass submission and go to the front page.
Slashdot's system [slashdot.org] was to vote up or vote down articles in the pending submissions queue. Colors indicated the popularity of the article, where "red" was soon to be released. Pipedot's system [pipedot.org] is similar but with a number instead of a color.
