  • Don't complain about lack of options. You've got to pick a few when you do multiple choice. Those are the breaks.
  • Feel free to suggest poll ideas if you're feeling creative. I'd strongly suggest reading the past polls first.
  • This whole thing is wildly inaccurate. Rounding errors, ballot stuffers, dynamic IPs, firewalls. If you're using these numbers to do anything important, you're insane.

Perhaps it'd be best if some examples were drawn up and then posted in a story, so we could see what the colour choices would be exactly, and what they would look like in the context of slashcode.

As I understand it, that setting affects the total page, or at least all comments on it. (I think you're interpreting it as applying to each comment individually -- apologies if I've misunderstood.) There's another group of settings that applies a score modifier to long/short comments, and that can be used to push novellas below your threshold.

Anyway, on a laptop or desktop, I do want all comments that meet my threshold displayed, no matter how many bytes that comes out to, because scrolling/collapsing (see my sig) is a much cheaper operation than loading a new page of comments.

On my wristwatch (whence I'm posting this), I think I'm going to create a new account so I can have separate settings, because my normal settings I normally use mean way too much scrolling. But I expect I'll just increase the threshold and keep the limit at 1MiB... at least I'll try that, see how it works out.

Maybe that script can be modified to auto-collapse/hide or display the title and one line of the start according to comment length or any other such variable? Then you won't need to mess with accounts.

Yeah, and I have thought of doing that (not just for the watch, also for its general utility), but:

          1. I didn't write the script, just tweaked a couple lines to get rid of errors and make it work on SN -- easy enough, but substantial investment of effort is involved to go any further, as then I have to actually read/understand the whole code.
          2. I haven't yet figured a way to run it on my watch (MOTOACTV, runs Android) -- Opera is the only browser I know works well on the tiny screen, and the android version doesn't do userscripts. I know there's an android browser (Oilcan or something) that's got a userscript engine built-in, but I haven't gotten around to trying that yet.

In fact, my vision for the userscript, if I do get around to understanding and tinkering, is for it to at least support showing/hiding based on score (so you set your slashcode threshold to -1 so everything loads, then let the script auto-collapse everything below your actual threshold, which only the script knows about). Possibly also implement an "abbreviated" state (more-or-less like D2), and in that case, paying attention to comment lengths is essential -- it's stupid to show a 3-line comment abbreviated to 2 lines, and it may be desirable to abbreviate wall-o-text posts, even if they're above the threshold, to 10 lines or so. I'm also thinking about text size/color/etc. to deemphasize low-score comments without collapsing them completely.

It's so much easier to fantasize about UI tweaks than work on them...

Yes, but. Yes the functionality is more important, but the color scheme is the most (I don't like this word, but) impactful visual feature of the site. It will turn some people away who can't stand the color.

There are plenty of people in the community who can do colors and themes and styles, so let them! The idea that the code has to be done before the styles is a false dichotomy. We can do both at the same time; we have the technology.

I actually think that the current theme may be significantly reducing the user base, because this dried-blood red color is not really very pleasant.

I think the easiest way is to modify your style-sheet. For a basic example, using the extension "Stylish" in Firefox, I added that :

                .commentTop .title h4 {    background-color: blue ; }

The result: an ugly blue for the comment titles (tested on the current page).

I'm a heavy user of Stylish, and -to a smaller extent- Greasemonkey. In some cases, I've almost completely modified the UI of some tools (Redmine for instance), to make them more usable. It's amazing what one can do with those tools. I modified Redmine so heavily that my colleagues did not recognize it at once. For instance, I added small icons for each of the people who worked with me (using inline -base64- images).

The only pb is that the site must use CSS in a clever way. Some sites don't and it's painful to change elements, sometimes you have to use the full access path, ouch! And when anything changes in the CSS, agh!

BTW this is how I minimized the pain of the Beta version of a site that shall remain nameless :-)

Given that most (all) people here are quite technical, this could be an efficient intermediate solution. We could even have an area with the schemes downloadable as CSS user-styles...

Seems to require a few tweaks (from my POV, green on red is NOT a good combination for a title - or almost anywhere, for that matter), but it's a decent starting point.

As for the poll, I voted green - with a name like "Soylent", it seemed natural. With the Other Site switching over to white, soon enough there wouldn't be any confusion anyway :) Though a different shade would probably be a good idea.

My reasoning is that while Soylent Green might be more traditional, we currently have Soylent Red, Slashdot Green, and Pipedot Blue, so between the three sites we have the three colours that make up a display pixel. It is a matter of taste, and I voted red, but I'd like to make a few observations and get feedback:

The site slashboxes with gray titles look good, the red links look good. The text boxes now look ok, and the text is easy to read and a sensible size, but the glaring thing for me is the title bars are very starkly red, very dominant on what is otherwise a fairly benign color scheme. If I had to change just ONE thing I would change the title bars, make them less contrasty - potentially even greyscale with a bit of red trim? The redness of the site needs to be a bit less overstated. Whatever color we choose I believe that understatement is the order of the day, since we are about content - the articles, commentary and ease of navigation are everything.

I voted to keep it red, the opposite of green and the homophone of read. I would like to see the package of Soylent to be green, though, perhaps on a bright fire engine red circle. After all, the green Soylent is people. The movie didn't specify what was in the other Soylents IIRC.

No, you're wrong. Wrong wrong wrong.

With emitted light the primary colours are additive, red, green, blue. That's why your TV has 3 cathod ray tubes in, Red Green and Blue. That's why your component signal is often RGB (or a mathmatical matrix to get it fitting in 0.775V like YCrCb, YPrPb or YUV)

Arty people and teachers like to claim red, yellow, blue as the primary colours of paint, and red, green, blue as the primary colours of light, and they're wrong. However you have got it completely the wrong way round.

The reason your printer has Black, Cyan, Magenta and Yellow toners is because CMY are the 3 primary colours of ink (subtractive primary colours). You can make any colour from those 3 by layering ink over each over.

Actually, even for "normal" people, three colours are not really enough to mix all existing colours. Especially the spectral colours cannot be mixed out of other colours.

With three appropriately chosen colours you can, however, get a large part of all colours (and a good approximation for the rest), and it happens that the best choices contain one red, one green and one blue colour — although the standard choices like sRGB can be far from optimal as can be seen e.g. here. [wikipedia.org]

Note that the display of the colours outside the sRGB triangle in the image is necessarily wrong. But then, the choices of base colours are affected by other considerations (for example, from the colours alone, the optimal choice for red and blue would be a spectral colour very close to the border of the visible spectrum, but there our eye's sensitivity is low, so you'd probably need ridiculously — if not dangerously — high intensities; also you're limited in what colours you can actually produce with reasonable effort, which I guess is the reason why the green colour of sRGB is so far away from the optimum which would be monochromatic light with a wavelength near to 520 nm).

Maybe. Ignoring the gradient on it, the wrapper logo uses three reds that, used together, might make a good starting point. Doing something about the pure whites on the page could also help -- the problem for me is that most of the site is #FFFFFF white or that dark red.

If trying to use the logo as a basis, the first thing I'd try is using something close to the wrapper base colour for the titles, with the user name/time line a lighter red like the wrapper highlight, and darken the comment area to something like #F0F0F0.

Light themes are good, but you don't want to overdo the pure whites. Look at something like play.google.com -- it's a light theme, definitely, but most of the light portions are #F4F4F4 or #EEEEEE, with #FFFFFF reserved for drawing your attention. It's bright without being eye-searingly bright. This is something pipedot and slashdot also get wrong, IMO, but on those it's mitigated by the lighter, more pastel colours they use.

I know they most likely have higher priorities than messing with this, considering they're trying to keep the news rolling while wrangling with the old slashcode, but I'd be willing to help where possible, and I'm sure people better than me at this stuff would help as well.

On a related note, are they planning on changing the category icons? They, along with the site logo, look like they're placeholders to me, but I haven't seen anyone soliciting new ones or anything.

For "Other" I choose "black" (not that it matters too much, at 3%). Therefore we get:

        0.27*(255,0,0) + 0.26*(0,255,0) + 0.14*(0,0,255) + 0.14*(128,128,128) + 0.07*(255,255,0) + 0.03*(255,255,255) + 0.03*(0,0,0) + 0.01*(255,255,0) = (114.82,112,27,61.27) ≈ (115,112,61).

With css can't we just have an option we can set in the preferences? Personally I like the pipedot color scheme.

I voted for grayscale because I tend to prefer neutral colors, but if this is soylentnews, shouldn't it be green?

I shall dubbeth the color scheme: Energy Saver.

Medium-contrast, near-black background (say #222, ish-abouts). Offwhite default text, blues and oranges or something similar for links and accents.

Color is probably the most important visual element of a web site's design. Some people will be put off by unpleasant color.

I don't think this dried-blood red is very pleasant.

There are many people in the community who can do design and themes and styles and colors. Let them. Then their themes can be plugged in.
