So, what is SoylentNews? This is your chance to tell us!
I am announcing the first ever SoylentNews online video contest. The rules are pretty simple.
- Upload an original video (no more than about 60 seconds, please) to the site of your choice (but please tell us where it is up loaded and ensure it tracks views) that answers the question, "What is Soylent News?" Your video should ideally contain the phrase, "Soylent News is ..." but this is not strictly required. Let us know what site you upload to.
- Tag your video SoylentNews.
- Watch as the hits roll in.
- ????
- Profit!
Too easy, right? We will count the views on 31 March 2014, at 11:59 UTC. The winner is the individual video that has the most views.
You do not actually have to appear in the video! Make a cartoon, do CGI, do a voiceover of a movie, whatever. Be creative and explore your artistic vision! (Yes, you have one. It may be underutilized at times but it is there).
We have not yet determined the prize for the winner, but it will be jaw-droppingly awe-inspiring (it's a key-chain I found on the sidewalk somewhere). No, it'll be something good. At a minimum we'll feature your video on the site here and interview you for the "making of" your entry. But probably more (it's a keychain).
On behalf of the entire staff and volunteers, we continue to be amazed at the response we've gotten from the community so far. We will continue to provide ways that you can interact with us and help define us. I hope you enjoy this contest. If you have any other suggestions for how we can better meet your needs, feel free to let us know in IRC, the Forums, or the Wiki. Thanks for reading!

This is a slashdot rip-off in the hopes to get rid of the crappy slashdot editors and company behind it.
I, with all my heart, wish it to be successful. So instead of this contest, go over to slashdot and post there to come over here, that is a much better use for your time than posting stupid youtube videos. We *know* what this is. Now it's just time to make it happen.
And, please, get rid of that aggressive red, just change it into something less bright.

This is no flamebait, this is the truth. Deny it all you want, but it's still the truth.
Even the site does not deny it, only you are. It copies the features and even the basic layout and targets the same audience.

No, not the same "audience". What USED to be their community. This site targets what slashdot used to target, NERDS. Folks interested in science and tech and who WEREN'T interested in IPOs and corporate takeovers and iThings.
Your use of "audience" is... interesting. Slashdot didn't used to have an audience, it used to have a community. Slashdot is wooing the non-nerds, because they outnumber us nerds 100 to 1. They've been getting more and more people over there who think because they have a Windows 8 computer and an iPhone they're nerds, when we real nerds know that we're not the ones buying the shiny shit, we're designing, engineering, programming, and repurposing it.
Dice decided to take slashdot in a different direction, a direction that is comfortable for non-nerds but intolerable to us nerds. So drag your wimpy little normal ass back to beta, boy. We came here to get away from people like you.

This is one of the clearest descriptions of what I want out of SN, also. The good parts of Slashdot were the highly technical discussions about computers, programming, technology, science, and math. Politics and business discussions can be fun sometimes, but the most interesting discussions (for me) were those delving deeper into the details than most other sites were willing to go. Even better was when someone actually involved in the work would chime-in.
So... What is SoylentNews to me? It's a site focused on detailed discussions on technical topics, by technically-minded people who are passionate about technical work. In terms of growing SN, this means making the comment and moderation system ever more robust, it means focusing the submissions towards the topics the community cares about, and it means all of us participating in discussions so that this place becomes vibrant and alluring to all the nerds that haven't yet joined.

Personally, I feel that posting comments to another site trying to draw audience away from there is counter-productive. Instead of choosing to identify SoylentNews by what it is not, I choose to identify it by what it is, a community. And a community should always have the choice to define its own identity.
Thus, I am requesting that the members of the community use this opportunity to help define us in a positive manner.
Honestly, I think we're past the point where we need to spam another site. I talked with someone on Sunday about the site, and he told me today he was up past midnight reading the articles and comments last night. We want to be a positive contribution to everyone, not just anti-something.

It got mentioned on the now long defunct browserwatch.com's chat forums.
There was a user there I got along well with who also showed up on /. ... and after driving myself nuts for an hour or so I found an old email that revealed the name I was trying to remember was Tridus.
