What is SoylentNews?

So, what is SoylentNews? This is your chance to tell us!

I am announcing the first ever SoylentNews online video contest. The rules are pretty simple.

  1. Upload an original video (no more than about 60 seconds, please) to the site of your choice (but please tell us where it is up loaded and ensure it tracks views) that answers the question, "What is Soylent News?" Your video should ideally contain the phrase, "Soylent News is ..." but this is not strictly required. Let us know what site you upload to.
  2. Tag your video SoylentNews.
  3. Watch as the hits roll in.
  4. ????
  5. Profit!

Too easy, right? We will count the views on 31 March 2014, at 11:59 UTC. The winner is the individual video that has the most views.

You do not actually have to appear in the video! Make a cartoon, do CGI, do a voiceover of a movie, whatever. Be creative and explore your artistic vision! (Yes, you have one. It may be underutilized at times but it is there).

We have not yet determined the prize for the winner, but it will be jaw-droppingly awe-inspiring (it's a key-chain I found on the sidewalk somewhere). No, it'll be something good. At a minimum we'll feature your video on the site here and interview you for the "making of" your entry. But probably more (it's a keychain).

On behalf of the entire staff and volunteers, we continue to be amazed at the response we've gotten from the community so far. We will continue to provide ways that you can interact with us and help define us. I hope you enjoy this contest. If you have any other suggestions for how we can better meet your needs, feel free to let us know in IRC, the Forums, or the Wiki. Thanks for reading!

    Viral marketing? For a discussion site to succeed it needs people to post, and while the initial uptake has been good the site is still way short of the number of posters that are probably needed to really be taken seriously.

    Taken seriously by whom? And, why does it need to be taken seriously by anybody else? Does everything need to RULE THE WORLD? I'm all in favor of this site becoming a non-profit. That way this kind of silliness can end.

      I was thinking more in terms of getting to undertake interviews with notable people, or being able to submit reader submitted questions to them, possibly even do some proper editorial work and request clarification on details of stories directly from the source. Then there's also the Facebook effect; some people are more likely to visit a discussion site because other people are taking part, and the more comments you have, the more likely someone is going to see something they want to respond to.

      True, none of that is strictly necessary for the site to post stories and the readership, regardless of its size, to have fruitful discussions on them, but just as the tagline says: "Soylent News... is People", so the more the merrier.

        Well, I've been thinking about that topic, I think we can safely assume we're not going to get Woz for the first interview, and I'm volunteering Bruce Perens or mcgrew to be the first interview victim. How generous of me to volunteer them, without even mentioning it to them first.

        Can anyone else think of a victim who's either interesting or a good writer or preferably both, and most importantly, is actually available? How about somebody who likely has a hell of a story, like worked in the IT tent in the park during that Ukraine uprising or something like that?

    Marketing for what exactly? Users do not exactly generate profit here and the YouTube crowd is nothing like the kind of /. users this knock-off is shooting for.

    Seriously, we can do without the YouTube crowd here so the OP has a valid point with this question.
