I'm also in the desert, and I love summer. It's a bit harsher than spring/fall, but you've got 18 hours of sunlight to get anything and everything done. The weather is PERFECT from sun-up until it gets close to noon, while you'd never consider going for a walk right after sunrise in the dead of winter (and "dead" is the best name for it). It has it's challenges, but if you dress properly, find shade wherever you can, and always carry lots of cold water with you, it's great. Also, swamp coolers happen to be far cheaper to operate than air conditioners.
